Hola! Happy Monday, y’all!
My momma has always raised me to take care of my skin. It’s SO IMPORTANT.
I can’t even sleep unless my face is clean. I could have had the longest night ever, but I will still wash my face before I get in bed. I feel like I’m suffocating if I don’t. I’m seriously hoping it pays off as the years pass.
I’ve always tried to use all natural and cruelty-free products, but it has become even more important to me since becoming plant-based (vegan). And since I suffered from some pretty intense acne in my last two years of high school, skincare has always been of top importance. It was so bad, my dermatologist put me on Accutane.
If you aren’t familiar with the drug Accutane, it is an INTENSE oral treatment for cystic acne. It can cause terrible side effects and horrific birth defects. You have to take all of these safety classes and have blood work and pregnancy tests done monthly to even be prescribed the medicine. It did clear my skin, but I also experienced a lot of the miserable side effects (like fainting at a pep rally my senior year in front of the entire school) and ended up getting off of it early. I’m still on the fence about whether or not I would recommend it to others with terrible cystic acne. It’s no joke, and I still get blemishes around that time of the month.
My tragic little story to say, while cystic acne can’t be prevented, a healthy, natural skincare regimen is of the utmost importance. Here are a few of my favorite products. I use most of these on the daily.
Alba Good & Clean Daily Detox Foaming Cleanser
I used to ONLY use Cetephil. Dermatologists had always recommended it to me because it was so gentle and moisturizing. I also suffer/suffered from horrible eczema. (Cutting out dairy ended that, though.) I started looking at the label a few months ago and realized it was all chemicals. NO THANKS. I found this Alba cleanser and have absolutely LOVED it. It leaves your face feeling so clean, but not dried out.
Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Balancing Toner
I love toner. It makes your face feel THAT MUCH cleaner. However, I don’t like using harsh alcohols on my face, which is what regular toners are made of. Not this one, though! This one leaves your face feeling just as clean, but it’s made of natural ingredients that won’t harm your skin.
Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes
If you haven’t started using facial wipes, you are SERIOUSLY missing out. These things are so amazing when you’re feeling lazy or super tired. I even stick them my gym bag to take off my makeup before a work-out or wipe off all the dried nasty sweat after I’m finished. I have a couple of brands I buy regularly, but the Yes To brand is great. I’ve liked every product I’ve ever used from this brand.
Philosophy Loveswept Body Lotion
This stuff smells SO GOOD. My aunt bought me my first bottle as a gift a few years ago, and I’ve been addicted ever since. The big bottle is kind of expensive, but it has lasted me forever. I even use the perfume too!
Pixi By Petra Glow Mist
I spray this stuff on at least twice a day. Especially if I’m not wearing make up, which is like every day during the summer. It gives your face a fresh and glowy feel without having to put any make up on. It’s moisturizing too, which is so important no matter what skin type you have. I spray this on after I wipe down my face post work out. Also, it helps that it smells really good.
SheaMoisture 100% Pure Monoi Oil
I believe in lots of oil on the outside of my body, just not the inside. Monoi Oil works to illuminate your skin. I use it instead of moisturizing lotion. I put it on right before I start applying my make up because it gives me that dewey look that I love. You can also use this stuff on your hair, but I haven’t tried that yet.
Ocean Potion Suncare Protect & Nourish Sunscreen, SPF 30
I saved the most important for last! SUNSCREEN! Wear it every day. No matter what. It doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy outside or winter or the dang apocalypse. WEAR IT and DO NOT TAN YOUR FACE. I’ve seen way to many older women whose face either looks like a leather bag or they’ve spent thousands on reversing sun damage. It’s just not worth it. My father has had melanoma twice, and I’ve had 3 scares. The first one when I was 5 years old. I’m not playing with the sun. I’ll save the rest of this argument for another post, but wear your sunscreen and keep your butt out of the tanning bed. RANT OVER.
There ya have it, ladies and gents. My best and favorite cruelty-free skincare products.
